Trader Jack’s

As far as where to eat in Rarotonga, Trader Jack’s is a landmark and practically mandatory! 

Located right on the water in Avarua Harbour, it is one of the few places where you can enjoy your cocktail while watching the Pacific rollers crash over the barrier reef just metres away.

• The Vibe: Relaxed, nautical, and always buzzing, especially during sunset. It feels like the unofficial social hub of the island.
• What to Order: You must try their famous Ika Mata. It’s the perfect introduction to this raw fish delicacy. Their fresh fish mains (often Mahi-Mahi or Tuna) are also superb. Though so is their pizza! It’s ideal for a celebratory dinner or a lengthy lunch where you can soak up the harbour atmosphere.
• Pro Tip: Try to time your visit for happy hour or an early dinner to secure a prime table closest to the rail. And you’ll get to hear Kura Happ from Ariimoana Walkabouts singing live.

Vaiana’s 

This truly is our beachside local fave!

• The Vibe: This is a beautifully local and laid-back vibe right on the beach – literally. But with awesome service, cocktails and sunset views to boot. 
• What to Order: We always choose their fresh sashimi and Ika Mata from Vaiana’s. Though our kids love the burgers and popcorn chicken! 
• Pro Tip: Book ahead for a table on Thursday to see the free – and awesome – fire show on the beach. 

The Market Experience: Where To Eat In Rarotonga

No sophisticated restaurant can compare to the raw atmosphere and variety found at the island’s vibrant night markets. This is where the locals eat, and so should you.

Muri Night Market

Held several nights a week (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday), the Muri Night Market is a culinary whirlwind. 

It’s an informal, open-air food court where dozens of stalls sell everything from Thai curries and stir-fries to massive fresh seafood skewers and local delicacies.

• The Vibe: Bustling, friendly, and atmospheric. Everyone eats picnic-style at shared tables under the stars.
• What to Order: Look for the dedicated local food stalls selling Rukau (taro leaves cooked in coconut cream), Poké (a sweet banana pudding), and the generous portions of BBQ ribs or chicken. Bring cash and be prepared to queue for the most popular stalls.

Punanga Nui Market (Saturday Morning)

While not a dinner spot, the Saturday morning Punanga Nui Market in Avarua is essential for food lovers.

Palace Burgers 

Ask any local where to find a good, hearty burger, and they’ll send you to Palace Burgers. This institution doesn’t deal in gourmet frills—just massive, delicious, and incredibly satisfying comfort food.

• The Vibe: Classic roadside takeaway. Order through the window and find a spot to eat, overlooking the harbour.
• The Must-Try: Their burgers are legendary, often stuffed with egg, bacon, cheese, and massive patties. It’s the ultimate post-swim or post-hike fuel.
• Tip: Visit Palace Burgers on a Wednesday for their Happy Hour $3.50 burger special! 

Vili’s Burger Joint

Another strong contender in the casual burger scene, Vili’s is conveniently located in Matavera near the Muri Lagoon resorts. They focus on fresh ingredients and offer a reliable option when the Night Market isn’t running. They often feature a great fresh fish burger.

Charlie’s Takeaway 

For unbeatable views and delicious portions of fresh seafood, you must stop at Charlie’s. Located right on the beach in Titikaveka, this is the perfect spot for a casual lunch. 

Grab a plate of their enormous fish sandwich (often served on homemade bread) or fish and chips, and eat it at one of their picnic tables overlooking the lagoon. It’s simple, delicious, and quintessential Rarotonga.

Annie’s

Right in the centre of town, this is a real locals’ gem, serving up insanely tasty fried chicken, fresh Vietnamese Banh Mi rolls, noodle and rice bowls, and yummy salads. We absolutely rate and recommend the Banh Mi rolls and would send you here just for those!

Cafes and Brunch: Where To Eat In Rarotonga

Rarotonga’s coffee culture has exploded in recent years, making it easy to find a great barista-made brew and a fresh breakfast.

Beluga Cafe (Arorangi)

Widely considered one of the best cafes on the island, Beluga is a mandatory morning stop if you are staying on the West Coast. It is close to The Edgewater Resort and other accommodation in Arorangi. 

• The Vibe: Trendy, modern, and breezy with a focus on art and design. It’s often busy with locals and expats.
• What to Order: Excellent flat whites and high-quality brunch items, including inventive uses of local fruit, eggs benedict, and healthy bowls.

The Cafe (Avarua)

Located conveniently in Avarua, The Cafe is perfect for that morning stop after visiting the Punanga Nui Market or before heading out on a tour. They offer strong coffee and a good selection of baked goods and light breakfasts to fuel your day.

Bite Time Café (Avarua) 

Another reliable Avarua option, Bite Time Cafe is known for quick service, reliable coffee, and simple, delicious sandwiches and pastries. It’s perfect for a grab-and-go meal.

Kai & Co (Avarua) 

We love the coffee here and it is right by the playground at the Punanga Nui Market. Plus, they also do a delicious lunchtime burger! 

A heads-up though – it gets seriously busy on Saturday morning for market day. So, get there early if its coffee you are after. 

Lucky Rooster (Avarua) 

This is a trendy central café next to the CITC Main Store and Pharmacy right in the centre of town. It is a popular hangout for both locals and travellers. We absolutely rate their coffees and breakfast – not to mention the awesome service you will get at the deservedly popular Lucky Rooster. 

Tiare’s Café (Muri)

This is the most famous café in Muri and one of the most popular places where to eat in Rarotonga. The café is beautifully set in an old homestead, and they do truly amazing pastries and delicious cakes and brunch with coffee.

2. Cash is Key at Markets: While most restaurants take card, the Muri Night Markets and smaller roadside takeaways are strictly cash only (NZD).
3. Embrace the Fish of the Day: Whatever the restaurant or café, always ask what the fish of the day is. It will be the freshest option, often caught just hours before preparation.
