Even living here it doesn’t get old! Ever since we moved to the Cook Islands, the Muri Night Market has been a regular highlight of living in Rarotonga.
It is a testament to the Cook Islanders’ inherent hospitality and their desire to share their culinary heritage. Born from a need to offer affordable, delicious, and authentic food options in a relaxed setting, the markets have evolved into a beloved institution, reflecting the island’s spirit of ‘Kia Orana’ – a warm, welcoming embrace.

What To Expect: Muri Night Market
Imagine the sun dipping below the horizon, casting a warm, golden glow across Muri Lagoon. As twilight settles, the air begins to hum with activity. The enticing aroma of sizzling grilled meats, fresh seafood, and fragrant curries wafts through the air, mingling with the cheerful chatter of vendors and patrons.

The markets offer an awesome variety of food. There are food stalls, trucks, trailers and tables set up with everything from local BBQ meals, seafood, curries, pizza, desserts and more…

Gavin’s favourite is always the Ika Mata. If you haven’t tried it yet, don’t miss the chance. This is the Cook Islands’ refreshing take on ceviche, with raw fish marinated in coconut cream, lime, and fresh vegetables. It is delish!

- Arrive Early: The markets get busy, and for good reason! Arriving shortly after 5:00 PM will give you the best selection of food before popular dishes start to sell out. It also allows you to find a good spot at the communal tables.
- Bring Cash: While some vendors may accept card payments, many operate on a cash-only basis. Ensure you have enough New Zealand Dollars (NZD) or Cook Islands coins on hand. There’s usually an ATM conveniently located near the market entrance.
- Embrace the Communal Spirit: Seating at the markets is often at long, shared tables. This is part of the charm! It’s a fantastic opportunity to strike up conversations with fellow travellers and friendly locals, sharing tips and stories.
- Casual Attire: The vibe is relaxed and casual. Lightweight clothing is perfect for the warm Cook Islands evenings.
Getting There – Muri Night Market
The markets are centrally located on the beachside of the Main Road (Ara Tapu) in Muri.
- Walking: If you’re staying nearby in Muri, it’s an easy stroll.
- Bicycle: Many visitors rent bicycles, offering a pleasant way to get around the island.
- Public Bus: Rarotonga has a convenient bus service that circles the island. Just tell the driver you’re heading to the Muri Night Markets.
- Taxi/Driving: Taxis are available, and there’s roadside parking along the main road near the market.
Cash or EFTPOS?
The Muri Night Market is cash-only with NZD currency.
- Tip: There is an ATM less than 20m away from the entrance to the markets that accepts international cards for cash withdrawals.
