Part I: Water Activities – Things To Do In Rarotonga

The lagoon is the soul of Rarotonga. These activities will ensure you spend plenty of time in the island’s crystal-clear, warm waters.

1. Take a Muri Lagoon Cruise

This is a non-negotiable activity. It is a longstanding and highly recommended of things to do in Rarotonga!

Book a half-day cruise with either Captain Tama’s (the high-energy originals) or Koka Lagoon Cruise (the slightly more polished, family-friendly option).

Both are equally awesome. Both whisk you across the iconic Muri Lagoon on a glass-bottom boat for world-class snorkelling, engaging crew entertainment (think coconut husking and sarong tying), and a delicious Island BBQ lunch served on a secluded motu (islet).

It’s the easiest, most fun way to capture the island spirit!

Heading out on the Muri Lagoon with Captain Tama’s or Koka Lagoon Cruise is a must-do Muri experience!

2. Snorkel the Aro’a Marine Reserve

For the absolute best clarity and fish life, head to the Aroa Marine Reserve on the southwestern coast.

This protected ra’ui (conservation zone) ensures the fish here are abundant and incredibly friendly. You can wade straight in from the beach and find yourself surrounded by schools of parrotfish, butterflyfish, and massive clams.

Bring reef shoes, as the coral can be sharp.

3. Kayak or SUP Muri Lagoon

If you prefer self-guided exploration, rent a kayak or a stand-up paddleboard (SUP) near Muri.

The calm, shallow waters make it easy to paddle out to one of the four uninhabited motu (islets). It’s a peaceful way to find a truly deserted patch of sand and soak up the panoramic views of the main island.

4. Discover the Island’s Best Beach: Titikaveka

While Muri is famous, Titikaveka Beach is often cited as having the calmest, clearest water for swimming and the softest sand for sunbathing.

Located on the quieter southeast side, it’s a perfect spot for families or anyone seeking a peaceful afternoon without the crowds.

5. Blackrock – Things To Do In Rarotonga

This dramatic, black volcanic rock formation stands in stark contrast to the brilliant turquoise lagoon and the white sand beach. It’s a visually stunning place and a favourite spot for both tourists and locals. And – it is one of the most culturally important sites and things to do in Rarotonga.

The calm sheltered waters of the lagoon here make it a perfect spot for swimming. Though beyond its natural beauty, Blackrock holds deep cultural significance as a departure point for the spirits of the dead. It’s a place where natural wonder and spiritual belief intersect, creating a truly special atmosphere.

8. Visit the CICC Church

Located centrally in Avarua, the Cook Islands Christian Church (CICC) is a magnificent example of colonial architecture made from local coral limestone.
