1. Drive Around the Island
With the usual scooter traffic at a minimum, Sunday is the perfect day for a leisurely drive around the island. The 32-kilometre main road, Ara Tapu, is your highway to freedom.
Start your engines and simply cruise, with no particular destination in mind. You’ll find yourself with a front-row seat to the island’s stunning scenery, from the rugged mountains to the turquoise lagoon.
We loved just pulling over at a random spot on the side of the road to take in the view or snap a photo. It’s a chance to see Rarotonga as the locals do, at a pace that is calm and unhurried.
2. Explore the Backroads
For a truly immersive experience, take a turn off the main road and explore the backroads.
Known as the Ara Metua, this ancient inner road winds its way through lush taro fields, local villages, and deep jungle.
On a Sunday, it’s exceptionally quiet, with only the occasional sound of a rooster crowing or a dog barking. This is where you’ll find hidden corners, secluded waterfalls, and a glimpse into the traditional, agricultural heart of the island.

3. Attend a CICC Church Service
This is, without a doubt, the most profound and authentic Sunday experience you can have in Rarotonga.
The Cook Islands Christian Church (CICC) is a central part of island life, and visitors are warmly welcomed at any service. The experience is magical, from the beautiful stone architecture of the church buildings to the stunning harmonies of the singing.
Everyone dresses in their Sunday best, with the women wearing beautiful hats and traditional dresses.
You don’t need to be a churchgoer to appreciate the experience; the singing alone is so powerful and moving that it will give you goosebumps. Just remember to dress respectfully—shoulders and knees should be covered.
4. Falafel Shack
Finding food can be a challenge on Sunday, but a few fantastic spots remain open. The Falafel Shack is one of them.
This is a must-visit for a cheap, delicious, and healthy lunch. The falafel wraps and platters are fresh, flavourful, and incredibly satisfying. Grab your food to go and find a quiet spot on the beach to enjoy it. It’s the perfect no-fuss, no-stress meal and the ultimate Sunday in Rarotonga experience!
5. Snorkel at Aro’a
Located on the west side of the island, the lagoon at Aro’a is one of the best spots for snorkelling in Rarotonga. With the tide high, you can spend hours swimming in the clear, calm water.
The snorkelling is a fantastic way to pass a Sunday afternoon. The reef here is teeming with colourful fish, and you’re almost guaranteed to see a few while exploring the coral gardens. It’s a peaceful and rewarding activity for the whole family.
6. Visit Black Rock
Black Rock, or Tuoro, is one of Rarotonga’s most iconic landmarks. Located on the northern side of the island, this large volcanic rock formation is not only a beautiful sight but also a culturally significant place.
The waters here are calm and perfect for swimming, and the beach is long and quiet.
On a Sunday, you can almost have the place to yourself. We loved just sitting on the sand, watching the waves gently lap the shore, and taking in the breathtaking views. It’s a powerful and majestic spot.
Plus, if you are in Rarotonga during the whale season this is one of the best whale-watching spots!
7. Walk up Hospital Hill
For the more active traveller, a walk up Hospital Hill is a great way to start your Sunday.
Located in the main town of Avarua, the road to the hospital offers stunning panoramic views of the entire town and the harbour. The walk is steep but relatively short, and the reward is a breathtaking vista that gives you a new perspective on the island.
It’s a great way to get some exercise while taking in the natural beauty of Rarotonga.
8. Avana Harbour & Muri Lagoon
While most of Muri might be a bit quieter on a Sunday, the beauty of the lagoon never stops. A visit to Avana Harbour is a must.
This is where the famous Vaka (canoes) are moored, and it’s a beautiful, peaceful place for a walk. This is the historic spot where the first seven famous Vaka departed from the Cook Islands onwards to their voyage in the South Pacific.
You’ll see locals going about their day, preparing their fishing boats or just enjoying the quiet. From there, you can walk along the shores of Muri Lagoon and simply take in the stunning colours of the water.
9. Avana Point
A quiet gem just east of Muri, Avana Point is a place of serene beauty. This small, protected harbour is where the Cook Islands’ voyaging canoes traditionally departed.
On a Sunday, the area is wonderfully still and quiet. You can find a spot on the sand, watch the fishing boats bobbing in the water, and just enjoy the peace. Or walk out to the harbour point and watch the waves crashing and fishermen perched out on the rocks.
