A glass-bottom boat cruise on Muri Lagoon is a quintessential Rarotonga experience. Operators like Captain Tama’s or Koka Lagoon Cruises will take you on a memorable journey across the stunning water.
These cruises typically include snorkelling with tropical fish, a lively traditional show with drumming and dancing, and a delicious barbecue fish lunch on one of the lagoon’s four uninhabited motu (islets). It’s a fun, family-friendly activity that gives you a great overview of the lagoon’s beauty and the island’s culture.
If you are staying in Muri, you are in luck! Otherwise, this is one of the iconic things to do in Muri, Rarotonga that is well worth booking ahead to lock in and look forward to.

2. Kayak or Paddleboard Around the Lagoon
For a more independent exploration, rent a kayak or a stand-up paddleboard (SUP) and set out to explore the lagoon on your own. The calm protected waters of Muri are perfect for paddling.
You can cruise leisurely over to the four motu—Koromiri, Ta’akoka, Motutapu, and Oneroa—or simply find a quiet spot in the shallows to soak up the sun.
Many accommodations along Muri Beach offer complimentary kayaks and paddleboards for guests, making it an easy and accessible way to spend an afternoon.
3. Snorkel in the Clear Waters: Things To Do in Muri
Muri Lagoon is a fantastic snorkelling destination. The water is incredibly clear, and you can see a variety of marine life, including parrotfish, butterflyfish, and sometimes even small reef sharks (which are completely harmless!).
The best snorkelling is often found near the motu (island) and in the deeper sections of the lagoon.
Grab a mask and snorkel and discover the vibrant coral gardens just a few feet below the surface.
4. Feast at the Muri Night Market: Things To Do in Muri
Every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday evening, the Muri Night Market comes alive. This is a culinary highlight of Rarotonga and absolutely one of the most famous things to do in Muri.
The market is a bustling collection of food stalls where you can sample an incredible array of local cuisine.

5. Relax on Muri Beach
Sometimes on holiday, the best thing to do is nothing at all. Muri Beach is a stunning stretch of white sand and swaying palms. It is perfect for simply laying out a towel and enjoying the breathtaking view.
The shallow, warm water is ideal for a quick dip, and the gentle breeze provides a welcome respite from the tropical heat.
Find a shady spot under a coconut tree and spend an hour (or five) with a good book. 🙂
6. Visit the Motu: Things To Do in Muri
The four islets in Muri Lagoon are a major part of its charm. You can visit them on a lagoon cruise or, if you’re feeling adventurous, paddle over on a kayak.
Koromiri is the closest and most popular, with a small beach perfect for relaxing. Ta’akoka is known for its beautiful coral formations, and Oneroa and Motutapu are more secluded, offering a true ‘desert island’ experience.
7. Avana Vaka Migration Site
Tucked away on the edge of Muri Lagoon, at Avana Harbour, is a place of profound historical significance: Vaka Point.
This is no ordinary scenic spot—it is believed to be the departure point for the seven great Polynesian voyaging canoes, or vaka, that sailed to settle Aotearoa (New Zealand) over 700 years ago.
Today, a simple yet powerful memorial stands here, with a circle of stones commemorating each of the seven vaka that undertook that epic journey. Visiting this site offers a deep sense of connection to the incredible seafaring history of the Māori people. You can stand where legendary navigators once prepared for their voyage, looking out at the very passage they sailed through.
It’s a peaceful, contemplative spot that reminds you of the remarkable courage and skill of the early Polynesians.
8. Avana Point: Things To Do in Muri
Take the narrow road (driveway-like) just before the Avana Harbour and Vaka Migration Site towards Avarua direction.
Follow the road to the end and park near Avana Point under the iron wood tree there. From the grass parking space here there is a narrow path that leads to the harbour entrance.
This is a popular place for local fishermen to cast from the rock ledge. But as a spectator the views from here are magnificent looking out to the harbour entrance and back in towards the Muri Lagoon.
It is one of our favourite lesser-known spots in Rarotonga and certainly one of our fave things to do in Muri.
9. Enjoy a Sunrise Stroll: Things To Do in Muri
While the west coast is famous for its sunsets, Muri’s east-facing location means it offers some of the most spectacular sunrises on the island.
Wake up early and take a peaceful walk along the beach as the sun peeks over the horizon, casting a warm, golden glow across the lagoon. It’s a serene and magical way to start your day.
10. Dine with a View: Lunch or Dinner
Muri has an impressive selection of restaurants that capitalize on the spectacular lagoon views. Places like Nautilus Restaurant and Sails Restaurant offer fine dining experiences right on the water’s edge. You can enjoy a romantic dinner with fresh, locally sourced food while watching the moon rise over the motu.
But our favourite place to recommend for lunch is The Beach Hut in Muri. This is a great casual lunchtime option with tables sitting literally right on the sand. We always choose the mutton curry and fish!
11. Experience a Cultural Show at a Resort
Many of the resorts in the Muri area, such as the Pacific Resort and also the well-known Te Vara Nui Village, host traditional island nights. These events are a great way to experience Cook Islands culture through food, music, and dance.
The shows often feature dazzling fire dancers and skilled performers who tell stories of the island’s history and legends.
12. Get a Coffee and Pastry at Tiare’s Café
This popular spot is a short stroll from Muri Beach and is a favourite among both locals and tourists. Known for its delicious fresh pastries, gourmet sandwiches, and fantastic coffee, it’s the perfect place for breakfast, a casual lunch, or a mid-afternoon treat.
Tiare’s Café is also open in Rarotonga on Sunday.

This museum, located in Muri, provides a fantastic opportunity to learn about the history, art, and culture of the Cook Islands.

With its beachfront location, beautiful pool, and contemporary design, it’s the perfect spot for couples or solo travellers seeking peace and quiet.
