Unlike large cruise ports, Rarotonga doesn’t have a massive pier suitable for huge liners. Your ship will anchor offshore, and you will be brought to land via a tender boat directly into Avarua Harbour.
This small port is bustling with local life, but it’s not overwhelming. Once you step off the tender, you are immediately in the capital, surrounded by the main cluster of shops, cafes, and historic sites.
You’ll find tour operators and transport options right there, ready to whisk you away. But the best plan might just be to explore the surrounding area on foot first.

The Walkable Heart of Rarotonga
Avarua is charmingly small, meaning the most famous attractions, shops, and restaurants are all within a 5- to 15-minute walk of the tender dock.
Iconic Eats and Watering Holes
Your first priority should be securing a reservation for lunch or grabbing a quick bite—and Avarua has some legendary spots nearby.
Trader Jack’s
This is arguably the most famous establishment on the island and an absolute must-visit. Trader Jack’s is right on the water, offering stunning views of the harbour and the crashing reef beyond.
It’s the perfect place to grab a cold beer or a signature cocktail and watch the island go by. Their menu is excellent, focusing on fresh seafood like Ika Mata (raw fish marinated in coconut cream and lime).
It’s perfect for a full-service, celebratory lunch that captures the essence of the South Pacific. And catch the beautiful live music of Kura Happ right on the waterfront deck of this famous stop!
The Palace
For a taste of authentic, local Rarotongan fast food, head straight to Palace Burgers. This isn’t fancy dining; it’s a beloved local institution.
Located just a short walk from the main town centre and pretty much the first food joint you’ll see off the ship. This spot is famous for massive, hearty burgers—often served with local toppings—that offer exceptional value. It’s the ideal choice for a quick, filling, and genuinely local lunch that won’t take up too much of your limited time.
Slipway
This is another great little takeaway with fresh fish and chips right on the harbour front. It is literally only metres from where the tender will drop you!
Kai & Co and Bite Time Cafe
Need a dose of caffeine and a quick breakfast or lunch sandwich? Bite Time Cafe is a popular spot in Avarua for good coffee, fresh pastries, and light meals. It’s quick, friendly, and serves as an excellent refuel stop before hitting the shops or heading out on a tour.
I absolutely recommend trying the Ika Mata at Bite Time Rarotonga – or the best breakfast and coffee at Kai & Co!
Shopping and Culture on Foot – One Day In Rarotonga
Within the same walkable area, you can easily tick off some shopping and key cultural sights:
Punanga Nui Market
If your ship happens to call on a Saturday morning, your itinerary is set. The Punanga Nui Market is the cultural heartbeat of the island.
It’s a riot of colour, sound, and flavour, selling everything from fresh produce and delicious local food (like sweet poke or fried chicken) to black pearls, woven hats, and wooden carvings.
Or – even if it’s not Saturday, the market area often has craft stalls open during the week.
CITC Supermarket
For practical needs, the CITC Supermarket is the largest and most well-stocked store on the island.
Located centrally, it’s the place to pick up bottled water, snacks, local toiletries (like coconut oil), or inexpensive souvenirs. It’s a quick, convenient stop for anything you need before returning to the ship. Plus, it really is only 150 metres from where your cruise ship to Rarotonga will drop you for the day!
Historical Sights – One Day In Rarotonga
Take a few minutes to stroll down the main road and admire the historic Cook Islands Christian Church (CICC). With its stark white coral walls and meticulously maintained grounds, it’s a beautiful example of colonial architecture blended with Polynesian tradition.
The nearby Cook Islands National Museum offers a concise look at the island’s seafaring history and culture, perfect for a quick, educational stop.
Short Day Tour Options – One Day In Rarotonga
While Avarua is great, the true beauty of Rarotonga lies in its lagoon and beautiful jungle bush in the hills.
The best thing about a cruise ship to Rarotonga with one day on the island? Since the island’s main road is only 32km long, you can easily book a half-day tour that gets you back to the harbour well before your tender deadline.
1. The Muri Lagoon Experience
This is, hands down, the most popular and recommended short excursion. Book a half-day trip with a company like Captain Tama’s or Koka Lagoon Cruise.
- What it Involves: A glass-bottom boat tour across the stunning Muri Lagoon on the opposite side of the island. You’ll get incredible snorkelling, see the colourful fish and coral, enjoy traditional entertainment from the crew, and be treated to a delicious island BBQ lunch on a secluded motu (islet).
- Time Commitment: Approx. 4 hours (plus 30 minutes travel time each way).
- Logistics: The tour companies provide transport from Avarua. This is the best way to see the island’s most famous natural feature.
2. The Island Discovery Tour (Bus)
If you want to see the entire island without renting a car or motorcycle, hop on a guided bus tour.
- What it Involves: A local guide will take you on the main road (the Ara Metua, or old inner road) that circles the island, pointing out historical sites, explaining local customs, and sharing stories. It’s an easy, low-stress way to absorb the full beauty of the island’s coastal scenery and lush interior.
- Time Commitment: Approx. 2 to 3 hours.
- Logistics: Guides often wait right near the tender dock. This is a great plan if you arrive late and don’t have time for Muri.
3. Take a Short Tailor-Made Fruit Tour with Ariimoana
For a unique taste of the island’s natural bounty, book a short tour with Ariimoana Walkabouts. This is our favourite tour to recommend and absolutely our highlight of things to do in Rarotonga!
- What It Involves: Meet Kura and Jack and explore the beautiful beach in Vaimaanga and head inland. This incredible fruit and inland tour takes you into the interior to explore the rich soil and volcanic flora – and the fruits of Rarotonga!
- Time Commitment: You only need a short time to do this as a tailor-made experience. It is absolutely worth it!
- Logistics: Kura and Jack will pick you up at the tender dock.
You’ll learn about traditional plant uses, sample seasonal fruits (we tried 16 different fruits!) and discover where the island’s freshest produce actually comes from—a short and true treat for foodies and nature lovers.

4. Rarotonga Cross-Island Trek
With just one day in Rarotonga, only consider this if you are very fit, arrive early, and absolutely love hiking. Do not attempt this without a guide to ensure you stay on track and manage your time.
It is a truly incredible inland trek in Rarotonga!
- What it Involves: A demanding hike across the mountainous interior, culminating at the iconic Te Rua Manga (The Needle). The views are spectacular, offering a dramatic contrast to the beaches.
- Time Commitment: 3 to 4 hours of strenuous hiking, plus transport time.
- Logistics: Book a guided tour that guarantees you will be back by a set time. This option requires strict time management to ensure you don’t miss the last tender back to the ship.

Final Cruising Tips
Before your day ends, keep these practical points in mind:
- Currency: The official currency is the New Zealand Dollar (NZD), though some places still accept and dispense the old Cook Islands coins (which make great souvenirs!). Credit cards are accepted at major shops and restaurants.
- Transport: The island bus is reliable and circles the island in both directions (clockwise and anti-clockwise). It’s easy to use for quick trips to Muri or back to Avarua if you tire of walking.
- Time Management: Always allow at least one hour to return to the tender dock before the last posted tender time. Rarotonga runs on ‘Island Time’ – but the ship does not!
