Punanga Nui Saturday Market – Markets in Rarotonga
Located on the waterfront in Avarua, the Saturday Punanga Nui Market in Rarotonga is a must-do on any visit to the Cook Islands.
The market is a buzzing place to be and has an atmosphere that represents the colourful and vibrant culture of the Cook Islands.
There are fresh drinking coconuts for sale, tropical smoothies, beautiful handcrafted island artefacts and colourful island-wear. Add to that the sound of island music and drum-beats uplifting the market vibe and you have a buzzing morning market to explore and enjoy.
Even living in Rarotonga, the Saturday morning market doesn’t get old and is still a highlight in our week!
While the market is open until midday on a Saturday in Rarotonga, early morning is the best time to go. First thing in the morning is when the tables are stacked with locally grown fruits and vegetables as well as homemade treats like poke and fresh arrowroot puddings.
Also, make sure to head over to the main stage from around 10:00am to see live music and Cook Islands dancing.

Punanga Nui Weekday Market – Markets in Rarotonga
There is also the fresh produce and vegetable market at Punanga Nui during the weekday mornings. This is quite different to the touristic market in Rarotonga on a Saturday morning.
But during the week there is fresh fruits and vegetables plus food and drinks at some of the different stalls inside the main stretch of the market.

Muri Night Market – Markets in Rarotonga
The Muri Night Markets in Rarotonga, located in the heart of the Muri Beach Village are a great way to curate your own dinner. There is a great range of food trucks, stalls and stands catering to the bustling crowd of tourists and locals alike.
The Muri Night Markets in Rarotonga are open Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday. It is best to get there early in the evening from 5:00pm.
There is a great variety of food from local BBQ meals and seafood. Try fresh drinking coconuts, chicken curries, wok-fried noodles, pizza, desserts and more.

Nikao Social Centre – Markets in Rarotonga
As far as where to eat in Rarotonga on Sunday; this market is an awesome discovery! The Nikao Social Centre Market is literally right in the social space above the beach in Nikao (opposite the tennis courts).
This small market opens late morning and fills with a bustle of locals after church in Rarotonga on Sunday.
There is the semi-permanent Vibe Fish & Chips and Brews and Scoops which are there most days. Then on Sundays at the daytime market you can also find Boba Inu Bubble Tea, Fresh Fix Raro, Baby Pancakes and more.

Tips for Visiting the Markets in Rarotonga
The best advice for making the most of each of the colourful and tasty markets in Rarotonga is to get there early:
- Go early to have the widest selection of food on offer.
- Remember to bring your New Zealand Dollars or Cook Islands coins as stalls are cash only.
- Don’t hesitate to try the delicious local food available.
- Try something new! Have you tried a drinking coconut or some Poke yet?
- Get to the markets by bus or if you are driving, park just off the road.
Are There Other Markets in the Cook Islands?
The Punanga Nui Market, Muri Night Market and the Nikao Social Centre are the main markets in Rarotonga. But there are some other smaller though noteworthy markets in the Pa Enua, outer islands.
The main market in Aitutaki is the Aitutaki Market, located in the township near the wharf. It’s open Monday through Saturday, starting at 6am, but the best time to go is early, especially on Saturday mornings.
There is also a newly launched Night Market in Aitutaki – the new Orongo Night Markets is held every second Thursday night at Orongo Park.
In Mitiaro, we loved the small Mitiaro Market at the hall in the centre of town. I bought my favourite collection of colourful Tivaevae cushion covers and some beautiful woven baskets.
The Mangaia Friday Morning Market is a local market held on Friday mornings in Oneroa village, Mangaia, Cook Islands. It’s known for fresh, local produce and traditional Cook Islands foods like ‘tiromi’ and ‘poke’. The market starts early, around 5:30am, with locals often shopping for produce then. So it’s recommended to arrive around 7:00am to try local delicacies before they sell out.
