Short Walk Up Rarotonga’s Hospital Hill: Best View You Can Get in Jandals.

You’ve seen the photos—the impossibly blue lagoon, the swaying palm trees, the golden sands of Rarotonga. And maybe you’ve even heard about the epic, Cross Island Track that takes you right through the island’s mountainous heart. But what if you’re on holiday? What if you’re looking for that perfect hike that gives you an energy-for-spectacular-views win?

Well, my friend, let me introduce you to the short Hospital Hill Track – this is the best lookout view in Rarotonga that you can get while wearing jandals!

This isn’t a heart-pounding, all-day epic. This is the kind of walk that fits perfectly into an afternoon, leaves you plenty of time for a fresh coconut on the beach, and still rewards you with some of the most stunning panoramic views on the island. Trust me, it’s a must-do.

I’d still class it as one of the hiking trails in Rarotonga (claim it!). But the beauty about this track is that it’s short; it’s clear – and you don’t need to go all out with hiking boots or even sneakers. This is the best energy for views walk in Rarotonga.

Find the Hospital Hill Track – Rarotonga

The hike itself is located in Nikao, on the northern side of Rarotonga. You’ll find the trailhead tucked away right behind the main hospital buildings. Don’t let the name fool you—while the view from the hospital grounds is already impressive, the real magic happens a bit further up.

There are two options to walk the Hospital Hill track in Rarotonga. You can walk all the way up from the main road (at beach level) to the hospital and then up the dirt track. Or you can park at the side of the Rarotonga Hospital carpark and walk up the track from there.

From the main road, follow the signs in Nikao up to Rarotonga Hospital (Are Maki Rarotonga).

  • Tip: Park on the left hand side of the hospital building. Make sure you are parked well clear of the emergency and maternity area.

Do You Need a Guide?

No. You don’t need a guide for the walk up Hospital Hill in Rarotonga. The track is a well-worn, wide dirt road, and it’s a dream to walk on.

Unlike some of the other trails on the island, this one is clear and easy to follow. So, you won’t need to worry about getting lost or needing a guide. It’s just a steady, enjoyable walk up to the beaut views.

About the Hospital Hill Track – Rarotonga

From the left of the hospital carpark, you start the ascent. The sounds of the main road quickly disappear from down below at sea level.

The track is a gentle, dirt driveway track heading uphill. There is an unlikely surrounding at stages of the trail with eucalyptus trees overhead. These plus giant ferns and the leafy canopies create a natural tunnel of shade, which is a total lifesaver in the Rarotongan heat and humidity.

But overall, this is the kind of path where you can take your time, breathe in the earthy smells, and listen to the birdsong without feeling rushed.

How Long Does Hospital Hill Take?

It’s only a 2km return walk – and you can easily do it in 30-40 minutes – so there’s absolutely no pressure.

It gets quite popular on a beautiful day for this reason. As you can drive all the way up to the Rarotonga Hospital; park there and then walk up the last bit of the hill. (Or you can start from down on the main road and walk UP to the hospital first).

The lack of technical difficulty means you can save your hiking boots for another trip and just get by with a good pair of sneakers. Or – if you’re brave – even your sturdy jandals.

Just be a little careful after a good rain—the path can get a little slippery.

Views From Hospital Hill Track – Rarotonga

The whole time you’re walking, you’ll catch glimpses of the coast through the trees and from small lookout points as you get higher up. It’s enough to keep you motivated and moving. And then, you hit the top.

At the top you can see the power station huts and just to the side is a small path that continues towards a lookout. (Plus, another path that loops around the top of the hill).

But from the side path, the northwest of the island opens up below you. The view from the top of Hospital Hill is a knockout. We watched a whale breaching just out beyond Blackrock!

You can see the neat crescent of the reef out from the coast. Plus, if you time it right, you might even get to watch a plane land or take off from the Rarotonga International Airport runway, which looks like a tiny toy from up here.

It’s a view that makes you feel like you’re on top of the world and a big reminder that you are indeed on a tiny island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean! It’s the kind of view that’s worth every single step.

About the Hospital Hill Track – Rarotonga

There is another short loop track around the top of the Hospital Hill. This part of the track only takes 5 – 10 minutes and joins you back onto the same track to head back down to the hospital.

Albeit one of the best things about this hike is that it’s completely free. No fees, no guides needed, just you and the track. It’s a perfect option if you’re looking to explore the island on a budget.

Make sure you bring a bottle of water. Because, as you know, that tropical humidity hits hard! And don’t forget the insect repellent. It’s a small price to pay for such a big reward.

This short and sweet hike is a true Rarotongan gem. It’s the perfect antidote to a lazy beach day, a quick dose of adventure that doesn’t demand a full day’s commitment. It’s a moment to connect with the island’s lush interior and appreciate the stunning geography that makes Rarotonga so special.

So, next time you’re on the island and a hike is calling your name – but your beach chair is calling louder – point yourself toward Hospital Hill. You won’t regret it.
