1. Getting Your Bearings: The Basics
Before you even step off the plane, knowing a few simple logistics will set you up for a stress-free start.
The Layout: Clockwise or Anti-Clockwise
Rarotonga has essentially one main road. The island bus service is fantastic and runs in two directions: Clockwise(the faster, main route) and Anti-Clockwise (the slower, scenic route).
You can simply wave the bus down anywhere along the road. This makes navigating between resorts, markets, and beaches incredibly easy—just hop on!
2. Your Wheels: Holiday to Rarotonga
The quintessential Rarotongan experience is renting a scooter. It’s the most fun, liberating, and local way to explore.
If you plan to rent one, you must obtain a Cook Islands Driver’s Licence (a souvenir in itself!) from the police station in Avarua.
Alternatively, cars are widely available, but the pace of life here is best enjoyed on two wheels.
3. Currency and Connectivity
The official currency is the New Zealand Dollar (NZD). While credit cards are accepted at major resorts and restaurants, cash is king at the markets and smaller roadside stalls.
WiFi is available. But mobile data comes via prepaid data packages from the sole provider, Vodafone.
Embrace the ‘disconnect to connect’ philosophy and you’ll be fine — you’re on holiday!
4. The Lagoon Life: Holiday to Rarotonga
The lagoon is the soul of Rarotonga. Protected by the barrier reef, the water is calm, clear, and teeming with life. Your time will be dominated by activities within these beautifully blue green waters.
Muri Lagoon: The Ultimate Playground
Muri Lagoon on the southeastern side of the island is arguably the most famous spot. It offers panoramic views of four small motu (islets) and provides the perfect launchpad for aquatic adventures:
- Lagoon Cruises: This is a non-negotiable activity for your first visit. Book a trip with either Captain Tama’s or Koka Lagoon Cruise. Both offer a half-day excursion featuring incredible glass-bottom boat viewing, world-class snorkelling, traditional crew entertainment (think coconut husking and sarong tying), and a delicious island BBQ lunch served on a motu. It’s equal parts entertainment, relaxation, and delicious food!
- Kayaking and SUP: Rent a kayak or stand-up paddleboard (SUP) and paddle out to the nearby islets. The water is so clear and calm that you can easily spend hours exploring the shallow fringes and sandy bottoms.
- Kitesurfing: If you’re visiting between May and October, Kitesurfing in Rarotonga and especially Muri Lagoon, with its consistent Southeast Trade Winds and flat, shallow water, is a world-class destination for kitesurfer of all levels. Or watch the local kiters out in the wind!
Snorkelling at Aroa Marine Reserve
While Muri is fantastic, the best snorkelling spot is undoubtedly the Aroa Marine Reserve, located on the southwestern tip of the island near The Rarotongan Beach Resort.
This area is a ra’ui (traditional protected area), meaning no fishing is allowed, which results in an explosion of marine life.
Grab your gear and wade straight in to swim with vibrant schools of butterflyfish, parrotfish, and giant clams. The visibility here is often astounding.
5. Culture and Adventure on Land
While the beaches are beautiful, take time to explore the lush interior and the island’s rich Polynesian heritage.
The Cross-Island Trek (The Needle)
For the adventurous traveller, the hike to Te Rua Manga (The Needle) is the island’s premier land excursion. It can be done as part of the awesome Cross Island Trek.
This four-hour, guided trek takes you through the dense rainforest, culminating in a stunning view from the base of the towering rock spire of The Needle. It’s challenging, muddy, and utterly rewarding. Though do always go with a guide for safety and for the fascinating and enthusiastic knowledge that they share.

Island Night: The Cultural Feast
You absolutely must attend an Island Night—it is the heart of the Cook Islands experience. This is a grand celebration of heritage, music, and dance.
- Te Vara Nui Village: This is the most spectacular and polished production, featuring an authentic Umu (earth oven) feast followed by a dazzling show performed on floating and over-water stages in Muri.
- Highland Paradise: Offering a more historical and dramatic setting, this cultural village is located high in the hills. The evening often begins with a moving welcome ceremony and focuses on the traditions and history of the ancient Tinomana tribe.

No holiday to Rarotonga is complete without a visit to the capital.
- Punanga Nui Market (Saturday Morning): This is the island’s weekly highlight. Wake up early on Saturday to experience the hustle and bustle. You’ll find fresh produce, local crafts, black pearls, and stalls selling delicious local food. It’s the perfect place to grab a coffee and a cheap, authentic breakfast while enjoying live island music.
- Shopping: Browse the shops in Avarua for genuine black pearl jewellery—a specialty of the Cook Islands—or pick up souvenirs like handmade tivaevae (quilts) and woven items.
6. Where and What to Eat: Holiday to Rarotonga
Rarotongan cuisine is all about freshness, coconut, and Pacific flavour. You can eat incredibly well at every budget.
Local Delicacies to Try
- Ika Mata: The island’s signature dish: raw tuna or mahi-mahi marinated in lime juice and mixed with fresh coconut cream. It’s essential.
- Rukau: Cooked taro leaves mixed with coconut cream, similar to spinach but richer.
- Poke: In Rarotonga, poke is a traditional, sweet, and creamy dessert or side dish. It is made by baking overripe bananas (or sometimes pumpkin or pawpaw) that are mashed with arrowroot and mixed with coconut cream and sugar. Delish!

- Trader Jack’s: Located right on the harbour in Avarua, this iconic spot offers fantastic atmosphere, great cocktails, and reliably excellent seafood, making it the perfect post-activity reward.
- Muri Night Market: An informal, atmospheric street food market (open Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday nights). This is the best place for a budget-friendly and diverse dinner, featuring everything from stir-fries and curries to fresh crepes and seafood skewers. Don’t miss the local desserts!
- Palace Burgers: For a quick, classic, and hearty local feed, stop here. Famous for its massive, messy, and delicious burgers.
Practical Tips for a Smooth Trip
- Respect the Ra’ui: These are traditional conservation zones, often marked by large blue signs, where fishing is restricted to allow the marine ecosystem to flourish. Always respect these areas while in the lagoon.
- Sun Protection: The sun here is fierce. Always wear a hat, seek shade during peak hours (11:00am – 3:00pm), and use high-SPF, reef-safe sunscreen to protect the coral.
