Rarotonga is a remote island nation where almost everything is imported. This means prices are naturally higher than in places like Bali or Thailand.
What to expect from ‘Budget’ in Rarotonga (prices are approximate, in NZD):

The traditional backpacker dorm experience is limited in Rarotonga. But the few institutions that do exist are essential social hubs for budget travellers. They offer the cheapest per-night rates and the best opportunities to meet fellow travellers.

Rarotonga Backpackers is often the first port of call for solo travellers and the most budget-conscious crowd. They operate a main complex on the west side of the island (Arorangi Beach), known for its stunning sunset views and proximity to great snorkelling spots, and also run several other affordable units across the island.

It is our favourite. We even stayed here one year at Christmas in Rarotonga and rented a self-contained bungalow at Rarotonga Backpackers right on the beach. We even saw a whale from our balcony – on Christmas Day!
- Accommodation Mix: They offer dorm rooms, private beachfront studios, and garden bungalows, catering to a range of budget needs. The dorms are the cheapest option, providing basic, clean accommodation.
- Location & Vibe: The main complex on the sunset coast is ideal for a classic South Pacific feel. The atmosphere is social, centred around the communal kitchen and dining area. This is where travellers exchange tips, arrange carpools, and plan activities.
- Key Amenity: The communal kitchen is large and well-equipped, making self-catering easy. They also often offer things like free Wi-Fi (a luxury on Raro) or equipment hire.
2. Backpackers International Hostel
This is another (one of two) backpacker accommodation in Rarotonga. Located on the west side of the island, very close to Aro’a Beach (the best for snorkelling).
- The Price Point: This is where you might find dorm beds for as low as $35-40, making it indispensable for the traveller attempting to stretch their stay as long as possible.
- Facilities: It provides the basic necessities: communal kitchen, shared bathrooms, and double/twin/dorm rooms with fans and mosquito nets. The setup is simple, clean, and functional.
- Experience: The value proposition here is simple: a friendly, affordable base from which to explore the island, with a one-minute stroll to the beach, a bus stop, and a convenience store. It’s a classic, no-frills hostel experience run by locals who know the island intimately.
Tier 2: Budget Motels and Self-Contained Studios (The Value Sweet Spot)
For couples, travel buddies, or solo travellers looking for more privacy and the crucial addition of their own kitchen facilities, the sweet spot lies in the numerous budget motels, self-contained studios, and garden bungalows scattered around the island.
These options often provide better long-term value than a private room in a hostel because the money saved on cooking quickly offsets the slightly higher nightly price.
3. Kiikii Inn & Suites (Avarua/Tupapa)
Kiikii Inn & Suites, located near the main town of Avarua in the Tupapa district, offers a great blend of self-catering convenience and a slightly more resort-like feel without the price tag.
This is a great budget accommodation in Rarotonga option.
- Self-Catering Focus: Rooms are designed for budget travellers, featuring kitchenettes with fridges, hobs, and microwaves. This is ideal for those who plan to utilize the local grocery stores and the famous Punanga Nui Market.
- Amenities: They feature an outdoor swimming pool, which is a massive bonus for cooling off after a hot day of exploration. It’s positioned well for easy access to town life, shops, and the main bus route.
- Social Rooms: There are also shared communal areas to relax in and socialise.
4. Central Motel (Avarua)
Located right in the heart of Avarua, Central Motel is perfect for travellers who prioritise urban convenience and easy access to shops, banks, the main bus depot, and the Punanga Nui Market.
I’m not going to lie – this is the most basic of budget accommodation in Rarotonga. It really is a very old-school and basic concrete block motel. (Don’t look too much at the outside first!). But, if convenience is your priority, this is right in the heart of town.
- Convenience: Being centrally located saves a significant amount on transport, as you can walk to many of the island’s administrative and commercial services.
- Basic & Tidy: The rooms are basic but well-kept, often featuring standard breakfast-making facilities and ensuites. It’s a functional, affordable choice for unfussy budget travellers – who plan to be out exploring all day!
5. Aroko Bungalows (Muri Lagoon Edge)
Finding genuinely budget-friendly accommodation near Muri Beach—Rarotonga’s postcard-perfect lagoon hotspot—is a challenge, but Aroko Bungalows provides a fantastic solution.
- Location Advantage: Situated overlooking the stunning Muri Lagoon and protected by the offshore islets, Aroko is one of the most scenic budget options available. It’s a dream location for kayak enthusiasts and sunrise watchers.

- Drawbacks: Less “tropical paradise” aesthetic; the lagoon isn’t as good for swimming in this section.
