1. Aro’a Beach – Beaches for Snorkelling Rarotonga

Aroa Beach is our favourite beach in Rarotonga! The snorkelling here at Aro’a showcases some amazing tropical marine life and it is one of the best spots on the island for snorkelling.
Located on the island’s western side, Aro’a Beach is widely considered the best snorkelling spot in Rarotonga. The marine reserve here is well-protected and incredibly rich with life. As soon as you enter the water, you’ll be greeted by an explosion of colourful fish, including butterflyfish, angelfish, and parrotfish. The coral is in great condition, and the water is typically very clear and calm.
The best part about Aro’a is its accessibility. You can enter the water right in front of the resorts here, and you don’t need to go far to see a huge variety of marine life. It’s a fantastic spot for all ages and skill levels.
2. Titikaveka Beach – Beaches for Snorkelling Rarotonga

Titikaveka is located just south of Muri on the southern side of the island. This beach is one of the best Rarotonga beaches for swimming and snorkelling. In fact, it has been voted as one of the top 25 beaches in the South Pacific by TripAdvisor!
The Titikaveka Beach offers some of the clearest water and best visibility you’ll find in Rarotonga. The lagoon here is deep and expansive, making it perfect for a long, leisurely swim or snorkel. The area is known for its beautiful white-sand beach. But it’s what’s below the surface that really counts.
The best spots for snorkelling are in front of the resorts and villas along the main road. The marine life here is abundant and varied, and it’s a great place to spot schools of fish and even the occasional sea turtle if you’re lucky.
There is a signposted parking area just above the shoreline at Titikaveka.
3. Muri Lagoon – Snorkelling Rarotonga

While Muri Lagoon is famous for its picturesque views and stunning islets, it’s also a great spot for snorkelling in Rarotonga too. The beach is beautiful with pristine white sands and is located in the sheltered lagoon on the eastern side of Rarotonga.
The lagoon is vast, and there are plenty of spots with excellent visibility. The marine reserve in the lagoon is where the glass-bottom boat tours go, and for good reason.
We love the snorkelling in front of the resorts near the main public beach. The fish are plentiful and accustomed to people, so you can get up close and personal. It’s a great spot for beginners, as the water is calm and shallow.
4. Black Rock

Black Rock Beach is located on the northwest side of Rarotonga.
In the late afternoon it is a popular place for catching the golden sunset over the Pacific Ocean. But during the daytime it’s a great one of Rarotonga’s smaller beaches for swimming.
More than just a beautiful beach, Black Rock is a good place for a snorkel in Rarotonga too. The large, black volcanic rock formation provides a dramatic backdrop for your underwater adventure. While the coral is not as abundant as in other spots, the water is incredibly clear, and the fish life is plentiful.
The best time to snorkel here is during high tide, when you can easily enter the water from the beach. It’s a great spot to swim around the base of the rock and explore the deeper parts of the lagoon.
5. Nikao Social Centre

The Nikao Beach is a bit of a local secret. (Well, apart from the large road sign that indicates ‘Nikao Social Centre!’). But this social little spot near the end of the runway is a great place for families and for the new Sunday market to grab a treat at the beach after church.
It is a bit of a hidden gem and a local favourite. The lagoon in front of the Nikao Social Centre is a beautiful beach, and it does have some snorkelling too, especially for those looking to avoid the main tourist crowds.
You’ll often have the place to yourself, giving you the chance to truly explore the underwater world in peace.

Tips for Snorkelling Rarotonga
There are a few tips to make snorkelling Rarotonga even better:
- Wear Reef Shoes: This is our number one tip for any beach in Rarotonga. The coral and rocky areas can be sharp, and reef shoes will protect your feet and make getting in and out of the water much more comfortable.
- Check the Tides: The best snorkelling is almost always at high tide. The water is deeper, making it easier to swim over the coral without touching it. You can check the tide chart online.
- Stay in the Lagoon: The reef that surrounds the island is a natural barrier and it’s there for a reason. Do not attempt to snorkel outside of the lagoon, as the currents and waves can be very dangerous.
- Don’t Touch the Coral: The coral is a living organism and is very fragile. Avoid standing on it or touching it. This helps to protect the beautiful ecosystem for everyone to enjoy.
- Go Early: For the best visibility and a more peaceful experience, try to get out on the water in the morning before the wind picks up.
