Muri: The Hub of Activity

As far as the best area to stay in Rarotonga, without a doubt, Muri is the most popular area to stay, and for good reason. It’s the heart of the island’s tourist scene; a vibrant hub of activity centred around the spectacular Muri Lagoon.

This area is perfect for first-time visitors and families who want to be close to everything and don’t mind a bit of a buzz.

I have to add in here that on our first ever trip to the Cook Islands we came for Christmas in Rarotonga with our extended family. We stayed in a self-catering, beachfront bungalow at the Rarotonga Backpackers. Which was just perfect!

Albeit bias, I know. But still to this day we really rate Arorangi as the best area to stay in Rarotonga.

Avarua: The Island’s Heart

Avarua is the main town of the Cook Islands and serves as the commercial and administrative centre. While it’s not a traditional tourist area for accommodation, staying here puts you right in the middle of island life.

Nikao: The Airport District

Located just west of Avarua, Nikao is the area surrounding the Rarotonga International Airport. While it might not be the most obvious choice for a holiday base, it has some unique benefits.

Plus – we might be bias. But we live in and love Nikao! We can highly recommend the awesome waterfront restaurant, Vaiana’s for a great sunset, whale-watching and brilliant local island vibes.

Our Final Thoughts

Choosing the best area to stay in Rarotonga depends on what kind of holiday you want.

If you’re a first-time visitor who wants everything at your fingertips, Muri is probably your best bet. If you crave a more peaceful, secluded holiday with incredible sunsets, head to Arorangi. And if you’re looking for a more authentic, local experience with easy access to all the major hubs, Tupapa and Matavera are great choices.

For a serene, water-focused holiday, Vaimaanga and Titikaveka are the perfect spots.

But one thing is for sure. No matter where you choose to stay, you’ll be greeted with the same warm hospitality and genuine charm that makes Rarotonga so special. Enjoy!
