The Golden Rules: What To Wear In Rarotonga
The reality is its comfort and sun safety first. Rarotonga is hot, humid, and close to the equator. Your clothing needs to prioritize keeping you cool and protecting you from the powerful sun.
- Fabric is Everything: Leave the synthetics and heavy denim at home. Pack light, breathable fabrics like cotton, linen, rayon, and light silk. These dry quickly and keep the air circulating.
- Sun Protection is Non-Negotiable: A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and a rash guard are more important than any designer outfit. The tropical sun is intense, especially when reflected off the white sand and turquoise lagoon.
- Footwear: You will live in jandals/flip-flops (or ‘thongs’ – depending on where you’re from). Pack one pair of reliable reef shoes for water activities and perhaps one slightly nicer sandal or wedge for dinner. Heels are entirely unnecessary and impractical on sandy or uneven paths.
Decoding Rarotonga’s Dress Codes
While the island is laid-back, the dress code changes subtly depending on where you are. Not to mention ton that as travellers – even as fulltime backpackers ourselves on the road for six years all around the world(!) – we still fall prey to overpacking. You really don’t need much!
Now we live here for a second time. (Which is amazing by the way!). But even moving here a second time I still (guilty) brought things in our shipping that I didn’t need too.
There aren’t strict cultural rules. But there are a few tips for what to wear in Rarotonga that will set you up well. Understanding these four settings will ensure you look and feel appropriate everywhere.
1. In Town, Shopping, and at Markets
When you’re in the capital, Avarua, browsing the Punanga Nui Market, or popping into the CITC Supermarket, you need a small layer of modesty.
- What to Wear: The best choice is a light sundress, shorts and a T-shirt/polo shirt, or a pareu worn wrapped as a skirt or full dress.
- The Big No-No: It is considered disrespectful to wear swimwear—including bikinis, speedos, or just your swim shorts—in town or in stores. Always cover up with a shirt and skirt/shorts when leaving the beach or resort property to venture into commercial areas.
2. Snorkelling, Swimming, and Lagoon Cruises
This is where practicality reigns supreme.
- Snorkelling and Swimming: Essential gear includes your preferred swimsuit or bikini and, most importantly, reef shoes. The coral patches and rocky shorelines in the lagoon (especially at places like Aro’a Beach and the motu on the lagoon cruises) can cause painful cuts that take forever to heal in saltwater. Do not skip the reef shoes!
- Lagoon Cruises: Wear your swimsuit under a light dress or shorts and a T-shirt. You’ll be asked to remove footwear on the boat. A wide-brimmed hat and a rash guard for sun protection during the long hours in the water are highly recommended.
3. Dining Out: From Casual to Upscale
The majority of Rarotonga’s restaurants fall into the ‘smart casual’ category.
Casual Dining (Vaiana’s, Charlie’s, Night Markets, Palace Burgers):
Anything goes here, as long as you’re dry and covered. Shorts and a nice T-shirt for men; a simple sundress or a stylish pareu dress for women.
Upscale Dining (Antipodes, Waterline, Vaima, Tamarind House):
These spots require a little more effort, but you still won’t need a suit or a gown.
- Men: Nice shorts or linen trousers, a collared polo shirt or button-down linen shirt. No singlets/tank tops.
- Women: A stylish maxi-dress, a neat linen dress, or a nice skirt and blouse. Simple, elegant sandals are perfect. The emphasis is on ‘smart’ casual—respectful of the beautiful setting.
4. Attending the CICC Church (Cultural Etiquette)
Planning what to wear in Rarotonga to church is a little more serious. This is the one place where island modesty is strictly observed, and dressing appropriately shows deep respect for the local culture.
If you attend a service (highly recommended for the spectacular himene, or singing), you must cover your shoulders and knees.
- Women: A longer, conservative dress or skirt that covers the knees, and a top that covers the shoulders. Many local women wear beautiful woven Rito hats.
- Men: Long trousers (light linen is fine) and a collared shirt (polo or button-down).
- Crucial Rule: Do not wear hats inside the church unless it is a traditional Sunday hat.

- Local Roadside Stalls: Keep an eye out for small, roadside stalls selling printed Pareu, t-shirts and dresses—often set up by local families—for unique finds.
