When you picture the Cook Islands, your mind likely goes straight to the bustling beaches of Rarotonga or the iconic Aitutaki Lagoon. But for a genuinely unique experience far from the tourist trail, there’s another island waiting to be discovered: the beautiful Southern Group Island of Mitiaro.
To me, the small island of Mitiaro epitomises Pacific Island life, people, community and landscape. It is simply stunning and truly, a little-known paradise in the Pa Enua of the Cook Islands.
Albeit Mitiaro is one of the smallest and most remote of the Cook Islands. But we have been fortunate enough to visit Mitiaro TWICE while living in Rarotonga!
Certainly Mitiaro stands out with its own unique history and island-scape. There’s plenty to do while exploring the island.
If you’re ready to trade in the hustle and bustle for a truly peaceful escape, here are 10 incredible things to do on Mitiaro.
Hey! We are Away With The Steiners. Wondering about living in Rarotonga, Cook Islands?
About the Island of Mitiaro
Mitiaro harbours some of the most stunning subterranean caves and swimming holes in the South Pacific. The island has two freshwater estuary lakes, multiple churches, a beautiful harbour and a coastal road that’s perfect to circle and find your bearings.
But how about this – the island of Mitiaro has a population of just 164 residents that live permanently on the island! It really is an incredibly special place to visit.
Known as the ‘Untouched Gem’, Mitiaro offers a rare glimpse into authentic, tranquil island life and the typical life of the remote, outer Cook Islands.
There are no resorts, no traffic jams, and no crowds. Instead, you’ll find a small, friendly community, unique geological formations, and a pace of life that forces you to slow down and truly connect with your surroundings.
Mitiaro is an island for a different kind of traveler—one who appreciates quiet moments, natural wonders, and the genuine warmth of local hospitality. It’s a place where you can step off the grid and immerse yourself in an unspoiled paradise.
We hope you get the opportunity to visit Mitiaro. If you do; grab it with both hands!
10 Things To Do in Mitiaro, Cook Islands
After visiting twice we feel very blessed to share the amazing things to do in Mitiaro, Cook Islands.
1. Take a Drive on the Island Road
The best way to get your bearings on Mitiaro is to jump in a vehicle and drive the single coastal road that loops around the entire island.
This is an unpaved road. But it’s easily navigable and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding coast and the unique makatea (fossilized coral) landscape.
This journey is more than just a drive; it’s an introduction to the island’s rhythm. You’ll pass by quiet stretches of untouched coastline and get a feel for the lay of the land, discovering hidden spots and taking in the raw, natural beauty of Mitiaro.

2. Shop for Local Handicrafts at the Main Hall
If you happen to be on Mitiaro when a group of visitors arrives, you might be lucky enough to find a small market – Hayley’s Market – set up at the main hall in the village.
This is a special opportunity to support local artisans and take home a piece of Mitiaro.
Here, you can find a beautiful collection of handicrafts, including intricately woven bags, colourful tivaevae(quilts), and traditional pareu (sarongs). These items are not just souvenirs; they are a representation of the island’s culture and craftsmanship, woven with stories and history.
We have a set of brightly coloured Tivaevae cushion covers, multiple Kete baskets (shh! Don’t tell Gavin I bought two!) and two beautiful handprinted Pareu (sarongs) that I bought from Mitiaro. The handicraft and weaving work truly is stunning.

3. Stop in at Pa’s Store
Pa’s Store is more than just a shop; it’s the heart of the community.
As the only store on the island, it’s a vital hub where locals and visitors can find almost anything they need, from a few basic groceries to a cold drink.
But more importantly, it’s a place to stop in. Say hello to the friendly family that runs it and get a feel for the communal spirit of Mitiaro.
The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and you’ll likely walk out with more than just supplies—you’ll have a story and a new connection.
4. Bathe in the Healing Waters of Vai Marere, Mitiaro
Mitiaro is famous for its unique underground limestone caves and freshwater pools. Vai Marere is one of the most iconic, known for its distinct sulphur content that is said to have healing properties.
This stunning cave offers a truly magical experience. As you descend into the cool, dark cavern, the water glows with an ethereal blue light.
A swim here feels like a natural spa treatment, and the tranquil setting provides a perfect escape from the tropical heat.
5. Jump into Vai Nauri, Mitiaro
Another must-do is a visit to Vai Nauri, the largest freshwater swimming hole on the island.
This massive cave is a magnificent place for a swim. It is customary for first-time visitors to be guided by a local.
Your host will likely perform a special welcome chant, creating a truly memorable and personal experience that connects you with the island’s spiritual heritage. The feeling of jumping into the crisp, clear water of this hidden pool is one of pure bliss.
6. Marvel at the Twin Lakes of Mitiaro
A defining feature of Mitiaro is its two freshwater lakes, Te Rotonui (Big Lake) and Te Rotoiti (Small Lake), which together make up nearly three-quarters of the island’s landmass.
These lakes are home to unique marine life, including milkfish (A’va) and freshwater eels (itiki).
The contrast of the calm lake waters against the rugged makatea landscape is a sight to behold. It’s a place of quiet reflection and natural beauty, perfect for a peaceful afternoon walk.
7. Explore the Harbour
Mitiaro’s harbour is a testament to the island’s traditional, fishing-based lifestyle.
Here, you’ll find small vaka (canoes) bobbing in the water, used by locals for fishing. While the harbour is a practical spot, it’s also a place of great beauty.
You might have the chance to chat with locals fishing off the small wharf and hear their stories of life on the water. It’s a small, authentic window into the daily life of Mitiaro.
8. Visit a Church on Mitiaro
The churches on Mitiaro are not just places of worship; they are architectural wonders and the heart of the community.
The most prominent is the beautiful white CICC Betella Church, a stunning example of local craftsmanship. If you get the chance, attend a Sunday service.
The singing is a powerful and moving experience, and the community is incredibly welcoming. Just remember to dress appropriately—a dress for women and a shirt and shorts or trousers for men.

It’s a wonderful way to connect with the island’s youth and see the hopeful future of the community.
Be sure to check with your host or a local to ensure it’s a good day to visit and that you don’t disrupt their lessons.
