While the whole island offers spectacular views, the best sunsets are found on the western and northern sides, where you get an unobstructed, front-row seat to the show. From casual beach shacks to elegant fine dining, Rarotonga has a spot for every taste and budget to enjoy this magical moment.
We live in Rarotonga (it is our second time living here in the Cook Islands!). So, we’ve been fortunate to watch countless sunsets on the island. We have put together our list of the absolute best spots to enjoy a drink and a meal as the sun dips below the horizon.
The North Side: Elevated Views and Harbour Charm
While the west side gets all the glory, the northern part of the island offers a different kind of sunset experience—often with elevated, dramatic views and a lively town atmosphere.
1. Vaiana’s Bistro & Bar
For a truly relaxed, barefoot-in-the-sand experience, Vaiana’s is a winner. Agreed that Vaiana’s is technically on the north side of the island. (Let’s call it north-west). Plus, we might be bias living here in Nikao. But Vaiana’s is our fave!
Located directly on the beach, this is the kind of place where you can grab a cold drink, order some fish and chips, and watch the kids play on the sand as the sky turns to fire. The vibe is incredibly laid-back, and the views are simply magnificent.

2. Trader Jacks – Best Sunsets in Rarotonga
Located in the main town of Avarua, Trader Jacks has been an institution for decades. While it’s not a classic sunset spot, the views over the harbour as the sun sets are still incredibly beautiful.
The atmosphere is always lively and fun, and the menu is a great mix of fresh seafood and pub classics. It’s a great place to go if you want a bit of a party atmosphere with your sunset.

3. Antipodes
For a truly elevated dining experience with a view, Antipodes is the place to go. Perched high on a hill, this restaurant offers one of the most stunning panoramic views on the island.
The menu is modern, with a focus on fresh, local ingredients. It’s a great spot for a special occasion, and the sunset views are absolutely breathtaking.
4. Tamarind House
Just a short drive from Avarua, Tamarind House is a beautiful historic building with a stunning beachfront setting. The restaurant has a classic, elegant feel and a menu to match.
The sunsets from here are beautiful, with the sun setting behind the palm trees and the water. It’s a bit more formal than some of the other spots on our list, making it a great choice for a special evening.
Plus, if you are visiting in the right season, it is a great spot for whale watching from the restaurant!
The West Side: Sunsets That Will Take Your Breath Away
The west coast of Rarotonga is famous for its stunning sunsets, and the restaurants here are perfectly positioned to take advantage of the view.

5. Castaway Resort Bar & Grill
If you’re staying on the west side, or even if you’re not, the Castaway Resort is a great place to catch the sunset. Their beachfront bar and grill has a lively, friendly atmosphere.
Grab a seat at the bar, order a cocktail, and settle in for one of the most beautiful shows on earth.
6. Falafel Shack
This might not be your typical sunset dining experience, but the Falafel Shack is so good that it deserves a mention.
While it’s a casual setting right on the beachfront, don’t be put off by the name ‘shack’. It is seriously stunning and right on the sandy west side beach! It’s located on the main road on the western side of the island.
Grab a delicious, affordable falafel wrap and find a spot on the beach to enjoy the sunset in Rarotonga. It’s a budget-friendly and delicious way to enjoy the late afternoon and evening. Plus, the Falafel Shack is one of the restaurants in Rarotonga open on Sunday.
7. OTB (On The Beach)
OTB is part of the Manuia Beach Resort and it’s a fantastic spot for a sunset dinner. As the name suggests, it is literally on the beach, offering unobstructed views.
The menu is a bit more upscale than some of the other spots, but the setting is worth it. It’s the perfect place for a special evening out.
8. Shipwreck Hut
The Shipwreck Hut is one of the most iconic beach bars in Rarotonga. Known for its quirky, rustic charm and fantastic cocktails, this is the place to be for a casual and fun sunset.
The bar is literally a hut on the sand, and the vibe is always buzzing. It’s perfect for a pre-dinner drink or a light bite.
The South Side: Reef Views and Southside Sunset in Rarotonga
Even though the south of the island is further around it still gets the incredible warmth and glow to the sky at sunset in Rarotonga.

9. Charlie’s
Albeit Charlie’s is one of those restaurants that is located on the south side of the island. But Rarotonga is famous for its stunning sunsets, and Charlie’s restaurant in Tikioki offers a prime location right on the beachfront to witness the spectacle.
The restaurant’s beachfront setting provides a beautiful view over the lagoon. As the sun begins to dip below the horizon, the sky transforms into a canvas of vibrant oranges, pinks, and purples, casting a warm glow over the tranquil waters.
With a cocktail in hand and the sound of gentle waves lapping the shore, enjoying a meal at Charlie’s at sunset is a truly memorable and quintessential Rarotonga experience. Do it!
10. Vaima on the Beach
Vaima on the Beach offers a more refined dining experience without losing that quintessential island charm. The tables are set directly on the sand, so you can dine with your toes in the sand as the waves gently lap the shore.
The menu is a mix of fresh seafood and classic dishes, making it a perfect spot for a romantic dinner or a family celebration.
