Rarotonga International Airport features a runway that literally lands metres away from some of the best viewing spots. You can get closer to commercial aircraft here than almost anywhere else in the southern hemisphere. It is just like the iconic images you see online where the planes land literally right overhead and right beside the beach!

Plane Spotting Spots in Rarotonga
- The Wind: The ideal spotting location depends entirely on the wind direction. Planes must take off and land into the wind.
- The Seawall End: Located on the western edge of the runway, right along the main road. Perfect for standard trade winds blowing from the east, also the most popular spot.
- The Town End: Located on the town side (east), ideal when the westerly winds pick up.
- Nikao Beach: At the Social Centre beach, safely out of the path of high-powered engine jet blasts, and perfect for younger children.

The Iconic Seawall End: Plane Spotting in Rarotonga
This is the iconic and most popular place for watching the planes land in Rarotonga.
When the standard easterly trade winds are blowing – which is most of the time – planes will approach from the ocean, over the western reef, and land directly over the main road to touch down on runway.
Standing on the seawall when an Air New Zealand Dreamliner or a Jetstar Airbus A321 approaches is an absolute rush. They fly so low that you’ll feel like you can reach out and touch it! These are the most popular planes to watch landing in Rarotonga.
A Note on Safety
While standing directly behind a large jet during takeoff at the seawall is a famous thrill, it does carry a real danger of jet blast. The force can literally blow you off your feet or spray gravel at high speeds.
Hold on tight, secure your hats, and keep smaller kids away from the direct path if a heavy international jet is lining up to take off facing the town end!
The Town End: Plane Spotting in Rarotonga
There is also a backroad that loops around the other end of the runway. This is a smaller, gravel road that joins the main road to the ‘Back Road’. But it has a good parking space and is literally the other end of the runway.
Sometimes the planes in Rarotonga land from this direction making it the better end for plane spotting.

The Social Centre Beach: Plane Spotting in Rarotonga
If you have younger children, the high-energy rush and loud noise at the direct seawall edge can be a little much. Not to mention that these days there is often a massive line-up of people waiting to see the plane landing in Rarotonga and take that iconic photo. But, for kids, we have the ultimate, family alternative that our boys absolutely love.
Head over to the Nikao Social Centre. There is a great gravel parking area right by Brews & Scoops and the Vibe Burger Bar. Not to mention making it incredibly easy to grab an ice cream or a burger from Vibe and head straight onto the sand at the Social Centre beach.
Sitting on the beach here puts you perfectly parallel to the runway. It has an awesome view of the plane ladning in Rarotonga at any time of day, and here, your little ones can play safely in the sand without you having to worry about traffic, cars, or that intense jet blast.
Don’t Forget the Outer Island Planes
While everyone waits around for the massive international jets, we think watching the smaller, domestic aircraft is just as cool.
Air Rarotonga runs a small but busy fleet of Saab 340 turboprops and smaller Embraer Bandeirante planes hopping back and forth to stunning outer islands like Aitutaki and Atiu.
Because these smaller prop planes are agile, they take off quickly, and hum right past the beach. We reckon these smaller Saab’s and the little “Bandit” planes are cool to watch too.

Because international flights to Raro arrive at specific times throughout the week, you want to time your outing for plane spotting in Rarotonga perfectly to catch the big action.
Keep an eye on Flightradar24, because the flight schedules do change. But a standard peak-season afternoon schedule often looks like this:

Other Cool Free Things To Do in Rarotonga
Beyond watching the planes land in Rarotonga right over your head at the airport runway, there are other cool ways to explore the island without spending a single cent.
Here are some of the coolest free things to do around the island:
- Snorkel Aroa Marine Reserve: The reef here has beautiful corals and tropical fish.
- Black Rock (Tuoro): This striking volcanic formation on the northwest coast is a local legend as the place where spirits depart for the afterlife. At low tide, it’s an awesome spot for checking out rock pools; at high tide, it’s a great swim spot.
- Tackle the Needle (Te Rua Manga): For an inland adventure, The Needle is an incredible island hike. The sweeping, 360-degree views of the lush ridges and surrounding ocean are unbeatable. But we do recommend this hike with a guide!
- Punanga Nui Market: The main market in Avarua on Saturday morning is a great experience. While the crafts and fresh nu (drinking coconuts) cost money, soaking up the atmosphere and catching the free, live cultural dance performances on the main stage costs absolutely nothing.
