It was a hellish experience and not one that we’d wish on anybody.

The onset of Dengue usually begins with a sudden, high fever. This is often accompanied by what is colloquially known as “breakbone fever” due to the intense discomfort it causes:

Understanding Severe Dengue

While most people recover within a week, some cases progress to Severe Dengue, a life-threatening condition.

Important: Individuals infected for a second time are at a significantly higher risk of complications. If you suspect you have Dengue, it is vital to seek medical confirmation to monitor your recovery.

A critical warning sign of Severe Dengue is that dangerous symptoms often appear 24–48 hours after the initial fever has subsided.

Watch for:

Recovery and Aftercare

Recovery can be a slow process. Even after the virus has cleared, it is common to experience persistent fatigue and weakness that can last for several weeks or even months.

Make Sure to Get Travel Insurance

We have always travelled with insurance from World Nomads and Safety Wing

While we would never travel without insurance – and it has been six years without a claim – we were very thankful for insurance when faced with the challenge of getting Dengue Fever in India.

Our insurance with World Nomads meant we could cancel our flights. Which ultimately meant we could stay in India for Gavin to get treatment for Dengue Fever as an inpatient at a private hospital.

While the risk to visitors is low, accommodation providers and other tour operators are continuing to take precautionary action by spraying to eradicate mosquitos.
