Planning a Cook Islands holiday but wondering about the best time to visit Rarotonga? 

With its lush mountains, beautiful reef, and welcoming Polynesian culture, Rarotonga is a dream destination year-round. However, for those meticulously planning their island escape, understanding Rarotonga’s seasons can make all the difference in crafting the perfect holiday. 

It is our second time living in Rarotonga now as a family. We’ve experienced this island throughout the year and can pass on some insider advice on the best time to visit Rarotonga and which factors you should take into consideration when planning your visit.

SEASONS – Best time to visit Rarotonga 

While there’s truly no ‘bad’ time to visit Rarotonga. There are definitely ‘best’ times depending on your priorities for weather, crowds, activities, and budget.

Rarotonga, like the rest of the Cook Islands, experiences two main seasons: the dry season (also known as the ‘cooler’ or ‘winter’ season) and the wet season (the ‘warmer’ or ‘summer’ season).

The Dry Season: May to October – Best time to visit Rarotonga

This period is widely considered the best time to visit Rarotonga by most travellers, and for good reason. May to October is considered the Dry Season in Rarotonga.  

Weather Perfection: 
Expect consistently warm, sunny days with lower humidity and less rainfall. Daytime temperatures average a comfortable 24°C to 27°C (75°F to 81°F), with cooler, pleasant evenings. This makes it ideal for all outdoor activities, from hiking the Cross Island Walk to simply lounging on the beach.

Optimal Water Conditions: 
The lagoon waters remain warm (24°C-26°C / 75°F-79°F), and visibility for snorkelling and diving is generally at its best. The calmer seas are perfect for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and boat tours.

Whale Watching Season (July to October): 
This is a huge drawcard for many! Humpback whales migrate from Antarctica to the warmer waters of the Cook Islands to mate and give birth. You can often spot these majestic creatures breaching and playing just beyond the reef from the shoreline, particularly on the western side of Rarotonga.

May to October (Peak Season) – Best time to visit Rarotonga

This period is widely considered the best time to visit Rarotonga by most travellers, and for good reason. This is the dry season in the Cook Islands. However, the seasonally good weather makes it also the Peak Season for tourism in the Cook Islands too. 

Te Maeva Nui Festival (Late July/Early August): 
This is the Cook Islands’ premier cultural festival, celebrating self-governance. It’s a week-long extravaganza of traditional dance, music, drumming, and cultural competitions. Which trust me – is absolutely incredible to be on the island for!  It’s a vibrant and immersive experience, offering a deep dive into Cook Islands heritage. 

However, be aware that accommodation books out well in advance, and prices can be at their highest.

Higher Prices & Crowds: 
Albeit this is the best time to visit Rarotonga seasonally. Though the great weather makes this the peak tourist season too. The season also coincides with winter school holidays in New Zealand and Australia (especially July/August). 

Expect higher prices for flights and accommodation, and more crowded beaches, restaurants, and tours. Booking well in advance is essential if you plan to visit during these months.

The Wet Season: November to April

While this time of year in Rarotonga is often labelled the ‘wet season’. Don’t let the name completely deter you. 

This period offers its own unique charm and benefits, especially for budget-conscious travellers or those seeking a more tranquil experience.

Warmer Temperatures:
Days are hotter at this time of year in Rarotonga, averaging 28°C to 30°C (82°F to 86°F), with higher humidity. This makes it a cheaper time to visit Rarotonga as a traveller. Which is great. Though living here on the island during the summer is the hottest (very) time of year in the Cook Islands…

Higher Humidity:
Rainfall is more frequent, often occurring as intense, short tropical downpours rather than continuous, all-day rain. These showers can be a welcome relief from the heat, quickly clearing to reveal sunshine.

Lush Green Landscapes: 
The increased rainfall transforms the island into an even more vibrant, lush green paradise. Waterfalls (like Papua Waterfall) are often at their most impressive.

Cyclone Season (November to April): 
This period technically falls within the South Pacific cyclone season, with the highest risk from December to March. While direct hits on Rarotonga are relatively rare, it’s always a possibility. 

Cook Islands Met Service and NZ MetService monitor weather closely, and warnings are issued well in advance. Travel insurance is highly recommended during this time.

Low Season / Shoulder Months – Best time to visit Rarotonga 

Fewer Crowds & Lower Prices: This is the low tourist season, meaning fewer visitors, quieter beaches, and significantly more affordable prices for accommodation and flights (especially from New Zealand and Australia). You’ll find better deals and more spontaneity in booking tours and dining.

Fruit Season:

Cultural Events (Outside Te Maeva Nui): 
While not as grand as Te Maeva Nui, events like the Tangi Kaara (drum competition), Mire Tiare (flower festival) in November and rounds of Te Mire Ura (Dancer of the Year competitions) in March/April offer authentic cultural insights.

Shoulder Seasons: April/May & September/October

These months often offer the ‘best of both worlds’ as far as the best time to visit Rarotonga: 

April/May: 
The tail end of the wet season transitions into the dry. You’ll likely experience pleasant warmth, reducing humidity, and fewer crowds than the peak months, with still-lush landscapes. Prices start to creep up but are generally more favourable than July/August.

September/October: 
The end of the dry season. The weather remains fantastic, often less crowded than the absolute peak, and you still have a good chance of whale sightings until mid-October. This is a very popular sweet spot for many.

The Heat – Best time to visit Rarotonga

The Cook Islands has a tropical climate, so there aren’t any significant differences in the temperatures throughout the year.  It tends to escape the extreme heat you might experience in other parts of the northern Pacific and Southeast Asia.  

Though I agree, sometimes in summer during the middle of the day, it can sometimes feel too hot to be outdoors sightseeing. 

In logistical terms for your visit, it just means you need to plan your days with some more care during the summertime. It is sticky and hot with the humidity and heat, so aiming to be indoors between the hours of 12.00pm and 3.00pm with the fan on is a guilt-free luxury to be enjoyed. 

If you’re staying in accommodation with a pool or access to the beach, this is the ideal time to enjoy those facilities alongside a leisurely lunch and a glass of something cold!

So, when should YOU visit Rarotonga?

Although neither the weather, heat nor festivals are enough of a reason on their own to avoid a certain time of year, it’s important to factor them into your decision. 

In our opinion, the best time to visit Rarotonga is August, September and October.

Ultimately, Rarotonga’s charm lies in its timeless beauty and the warmth of its people. No matter when you choose to go, you’re guaranteed a beautiful, relaxing, and culturally rich experience. Just pack appropriately for the season, be mindful of peak demand, and prepare to fall in love with this unforgettable Pacific gem.
