1. Trader Jacks – Best Rarotonga Restaurants

A true Rarotongan institution, Trader Jacks is a must-visit for its lively atmosphere and prime waterfront location. Located in Avarua, the restaurant is built over the harbour, offering a lively, nautical-themed atmosphere. 

The view is stunning; and the chances are that on a weekday evening at Trader Jacks you can see the Vaka Ama (canoes) coming in from a paddle around the island. It’s a place where you can enjoy a cold beer and a hearty meal while watching the world – on the water – go by. 

The menu is diverse, featuring classic pub fare, fresh seafood, and juicy steaks. The casual, fun-loving vibe makes it a great spot for a relaxed dinner with friends or family. Not to mention the reef isn’t too far away for whale spotting either!

On Friday night you can hear the amazing Kura Happ playing live on the main deck. This is even cooler if you have already done one of the Ariimoana Walkabouts or tours with Kura and Jack during the day. They make it a beautiful evening out at Trader Jacks too!

It’s a lively spot that never feels too formal.

For the quintessential ‘sand-between-your-toes’ dining experience, head to Vaianas. We might be admittedly bias. But living here in Rarotonga, this is one of our fave restaurants in Rarotonga. 

Located just minutes from the airport, this beachfront bar and bistro is famous for its breathtaking sunsets. The atmosphere is laid-back and family-friendly, with a menu that offers a variety of fresh, delicious food. 

They often have themed dinner nights and live entertainment, making each visit a new experience. 

Settle into an outdoor hut with a thatched roof or grab a table right on the shoreline, sip on a cocktail during happy hour, and watch the sky transform into a canvas of fiery colours as the sun dips below the horizon. It’s magic! 

3. Tamarind House – Best Rarotonga Restaurants

Step back in time at Tamarind House, a restaurant housed in a beautifully restored colonial building. This spot offers a more refined dining experience with an elegant, oceanfront setting. Which believe me is absolutely stunning – each time we’ve had dinner at Tamarind House since living in Rarotonga this time round; we’ve seen whales from the restaurant! 

The menu is a modern take on Pacific and international cuisine, using fresh local ingredients to create sophisticated and flavourful dishes. It’s an ideal location for a romantic dinner or a special celebration. The gentle island breeze and the sound of the waves provide a tranquil backdrop, and the live ukulele music adds a charming local touch.

4. Antipodes – Best Rarotonga Restaurants

Perched on a cliff at Blackrock, Antipodes offers what many consider to be the best elevated, uninterrupted views on the island. The Mediterranean-inspired cuisine is as spectacular as the scenery. The open-air dining areas are spread across three levels, ensuring every guest gets a magnificent view of the sunset. Which again – is a spectacular spot for whale-watching during the season! 

The menu is carefully designed with options for various dietary needs, including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and lactose-free dishes. It is a beautiful menu. Albeit this is one of the most upmarket places for dinner on Rarotonga!  

But the ambiance is one of sophisticated tranquillity, making it a perfect escape for a memorable evening. It is highly recommended. 

5. Castaway – Best Rarotonga Restaurants

Located at Castaway Resort, The Castaway Beach Bar is a hidden gem that offers a beautiful menu every night of the week. The restaurant is open for dinner and provides a relaxed, tropical dining experience. 

Situated right on the beach, both the restaurant and bar offers breathtaking views and seasonal whale watching, making it the perfect place for cocktails and memorable moments.

6. Charlie’s – Best Rarotonga Restaurants

Charlie’s is the epitome of casual, beachfront dining. It is one of our main faves as far as Rarotonga restaurants for dinner! This cafe and bar, located right on the beach, offers a cool, relaxed ‘sand between your toes’ vibe. It’s a fantastic spot for a light meal, fresh seafood, and just an awesome all-round atmosphere. 

The menu is simple but delicious, with our fam favourites like fresh fish sandwiches, tacos, and burgers. Plus Gavin and I always picks the fresh sashimi platter to share – because we can’t choose just one of the above! 

Charlie’s is known for its lively atmosphere, often featuring live music, and friendly service. It’s the perfect place to unwind after a day of swimming or kayaking and enjoy the simple pleasures of island life.

7. On The Beach (OTB)

OTB is a highly-regarded, award-winning restaurant known for its exquisite cuisine and stunning beachfront location.
