Alright, fellow food enthusiasts and island dreamers! You’ve soaked up the sun, swum in the pristine lagoon, and hiked the lush interior of Rarotonga. But let’s be honest, sometimes, even in paradise, the craving hits. That primal urge for a perfectly grilled patty, nestled in a soft bun with all the fixings. Yes, we’re talking about the humble, yet glorious, BURGER in Rarotonga!
You might not immediately associate Rarotonga with a burgeoning burger scene. But you’d be delightfully mistaken. From roadside shacks serving late-night cravings to upscale beachfront eateries, this little island packs a surprising punch when it comes to satisfying that burger craving.
We’ve munched our way around the island – seriously; we live here in Rarotonga – and here’s our rundown of where to find some of the best burgers in Rarotonga. Get ready to add these to your must-try list!
1. Vili’s Burger Joint: The Island Icon
You simply cannot talk about burgers in Rarotonga without starting with Vili’s Burger Joint in Muri. This is more than just a burger; it’s an institution, a rite of passage, and often, a late-night saviour. Vili’s is known for its generous portions, fresh ingredients, and that quintessential roadside burger joint vibe.
Their classic cheeseburger is a flavour bomb – juicy patty, fresh salad, and their signature sauce, all wrapped up ready for you to devour on a picnic bench or take back to your accommodation. It’s unpretentious, delicious, and a true taste of local Rarotongan fast food.
Don’t be surprised if you become a repeat customer!
2. Palace Burger & Bar: Beachfront Bliss with a Bite
Located right on the harbour front in Avatiu (Avarua), Palace Burger & Bar is one of the most iconic burgers in Rarotonga. Their strength lies in their commitment to fresh, local ingredients. But also in the famously bargain ‘Happy Hour’ burgers; along with the more than iconic Palace Wet Burger!
Happy Hour at Palace is every Wednesdays from 8am to 8pm. Happy Hour Burgers are: @$3.50 Egg Burger, Cheese Burger, Hawaiian Burger, Ham Burger and Vegie Burger.
Pair it with a cold drink and those incredible harbour views, and you’ve got yourself a perfect island fast lunch or early dinner.
3. The Slipway: Harbourfront Burgers in Rarotonga
The Slipway offers a surprisingly good burger in a convenient, relaxed setting right on the edge of Avatiu Harbour.
Their burger often features a thicker, well-seasoned patty, sometimes with gourmet toppings like onion jam and deliciously melted cheese. (Which trust me, living in Rarotonga, cheese is a luxury!).
It’s the kind of burger that feels a bit more elevated than your standard roadside fare. The views over the harbour are uniquely Rarotonga with the hustle and bustle of ships loading or the fishing boats coming back in for the afternoon. Their fries are usually on point too!

4. Vaiana’s Bistro & Bar: Sunset & Sizzle
Nestled right on the sand with uninterrupted sunset views, Vaiana’s Bistro & Bar is famous for its vibrant atmosphere and fresh seafood. However, don’t overlook their burger!
Vaiana’s typically offers a solid, satisfying classic burger that stands up well against their other popular dishes. It’s the perfect accompaniment to a cold beer as you watch the sun dip below the horizon. Or whales if you are in the right season!
The casual, lively vibe makes it a great spot for families and groups. Plus every Thursday is a culture and fire show right there on the sand. Great service, tasty seafood, cold drinks and fab burgers in Rarotonga’s sunset!
5. Charlie’s Cafe & Bar: Hearty & Happening
Charlie’s Cafe & Bar in Tikioki, Titikaveka on the south side of the island is a lively spot known for its fresh dishes, live music, and excellent beachfront location.
I’ve got to say that we usually hit Charlie’s for the fresh Ika Mata and sashimi. But as far as research for best burgers in Rarotonga we were very pleased to taste and share Charlie’s!
Their burger is a hearty affair, often piled high with fresh salad and a decent-sized patty. It’s the kind of burger that truly fills you up after a long day of adventuring.
The atmosphere here is always buzzing, especially around lunch and early dinner, making it a great spot for a casual, satisfying meal with good vibes. Highly recommend!
6. Trader Jacks: The Waterfront Classic
A Rarotongan institution, Trader Jacks in Avarua offers an iconic waterfront dining experience. While their seafood and pizzas are popular, their burger is a solid pub-style classic.
It’s reliably good – a no-fuss, well-cooked patty with standard toppings, served in a lively, bustling atmosphere overlooking the harbour. It’s a great choice when you’re in town and craving a familiar, comforting bite with a side of local character.
7. RSC Beachfront Bar & Brasserie (Rarotonga Sailing Club): Casual & Scenic
The RSC Beachfront Bar & Brasserie, home of the Rarotonga Sailing Club, offers a wonderfully casual setting with fantastic views of the lagoon, motu (islands) and reef.
Their menu often features classic pub fare, and their burger is a consistent crowd-pleaser. It’s unpretentious, good value, and perfect for a relaxed lunch after a morning swim.
The laid-back, friendly atmosphere and the stunning outlook make it a hidden gem for a simple, satisfying burger.
8. Castaways Restaurant & Bar: Sunset Burgers in Rarotonga
Perched literally over the water at the Castaways Resort, Castaways Restaurant & Bar offers a unique dining experience.
Their menu is varied, and their burger often leans towards a slightly more gourmet presentation, using quality ingredients.
Enjoying a well-crafted burger with the sound of the waves lapping beneath you is a pretty special experience. It’s a great option for a relaxed evening meal with a beautiful view.
9. Vibe Fish Van: Beach Burgers in Rarotonga
For an authentic and unforgettable meal in Rarotonga, seek out the iconic Vibe Fish Van.
This popular food truck has earned its reputation for serving some of the freshest and most delicious food on the island. While everything on their menu is fantastic, the legendary fish burgers are the main event.
Albeit the kids go for the Vibe Cheeseburger. But Gavin and I absolutely rate the fresh Vibe Fish Burger! They are stacked high with a thick, perfectly grilled fillet of freshly caught fish, crisp lettuce, and a zesty sauce, all on a soft bun.
The best part? It’s a grab-and-go experience. You simply order your meal, grab a spot on the sand, and enjoy a gourmet burger with your toes in the sand, all while watching a breathtaking Rarotonga sunset. Or grab a late burger at from the Vibe Fish Van and pull up a seat at the Nikao Social Centre.
10. The Beach Hut (Muri): Quick Bites by the Lagoon
For a super casual, quick, and easy burger fix right on Muri Lagoon, The Beach Hut is a great stop. While they offer a variety of snacks and light meals, their burger is a solid choice when you need something fast and satisfying before or after a swim or kayak.
It embodies that relaxed, ‘grab and go’ island vibe, perfect for those days when you just want good food without the fuss, right by the water’s edge. Or slow it down and grab one of the best burgers in Rarotonga on a Sunday at The Beach Hut with live music to boot!
The Great Rarotonga Burger Quest!
So there you have it – a culinary journey around Rarotonga, one delicious patty at a time. What makes a ‘best’ burger is ultimately subjective, so we encourage you to embark on your own burger quest.
Look for places that use fresh local produce, ask about their secret sauces, and most importantly, enjoy every single juicy bite in this incredible tropical setting. Happy burger hunting!
