Part I: The Essential Water Experiences – Activities in Rarotonga

Rarotonga is defined by its beautifully blue surrounding lagoon. These activities in Rarotonga ensure you spend plenty of time exploring the warm, protected waters. It is a must to explore in the lagoon!

1. Embark on a Muri Lagoon Cruise

This is arguably the quintessential Rarotonga experience and should be the first of activities in Rarotonga on your list! Companies like Captain Tama’s and Koka Lagoon Cruise offer a half-day adventure on their glass-bottom boats across the stunning Muri Lagoon.

You’ll be treated to exceptional snorkelling at the coral gardens, lively entertainment from the crew (expect humorous shows and demonstrations on coconut husking), and a delicious Island BBQ lunch served on one of the lagoon’s uninhabited motu (islets). It’s an all-in-one package of fun, food, and natural beauty.

2. Snorkelling at Aro’a Marine Reserve

While the lagoon cruises provide a great introduction, true snorkel enthusiasts must head to the Aroa Marine Reserve on the southwestern side of the island (near The Rarotongan Resort).

This area is designated as a ra’ui (traditional marine protected area), and the results are stunning. The water is often crystal-clear, and the fish life is abundant and fearless. You can wade straight in from the beach and immediately find yourself surrounded by vibrant schools of butterflyfish and parrotfish.

3. Explore Muri Lagoon by Kayak or SUP

Beyond the structured cruise, take time to explore Muri Lagoon at your own pace. Renting a kayak or a stand-up paddleboard (SUP) is easy, with hire shops readily available near the water’s edge.

The shallow, calm nature of the lagoon makes it safe and easy for beginners to paddle out to the small, uninhabited motu visible just offshore. It’s a peaceful, meditative way to soak in the famous island views and discover your own private beach for an hour or two.

4. Discover Wigmore’s Waterfall

For a refreshing change from saltwater, head inland to find Papua Waterfall (also known as Wigmore’s Waterfall. Located near the Wigmore’s Superstore, this small but picturesque waterfall offers a beautiful, cooling pool for a freshwater dip.

While it flows best after a heavy rain, it’s a lovely, quick detour into the lush interior and a great place to cool off during a hot day driving the Ara Metua (inner road).

Part II: Culture, Community, and Local Life – Activities in Rarotonga

The next charm of activities in Rarotonga lies in its people and traditions. Engaging with the local life is as rewarding as swimming in the lagoon!

5. Attend a Service at the CICC Church

Located centrally in Avarua, the Cook Islands Christian Church (CICC) is a magnificent coral-stone structure and the religious and social heart of the community. Attending a Sunday morning service is a profound cultural experience – even if you aren’t a regular churchgoer at home.

The main draw is the himene—the stunning, unaccompanied, and harmonious singing that is world-famous for its passion and depth.

6. Experience the Punanga Nui Market

If your stay includes a Saturday, the Punanga Nui Market in Avarua is essential. This is the island’s primary social and commercial hub, operating from early morning. It is the most iconic of activities in Rarotonga and well worth the Saturday dedication!

It’s a vibrant riot of colour and sound, where you can buy fresh local produce, incredible street food (try a local poke or a pork bun), beautiful crafts, and the famous Cook Islands black pearls. It’s the perfect place to grab a coffee, a cheap breakfast, and soak up the lively community atmosphere.

7. Join the SPCA Waggy Tails Walk

For a truly unique and heartwarming community experience, join the SPCA Waggy Tails Walk. Held regularly (check the SPCA Cook Islands Facebook page for times and locations), this activity involves walking the rescued and resident shelter dogs, giving them exercise and socialization.

It’s an excellent way to meet local residents (and the local dog-residents), support a good cause, and spend an hour getting some exercise with a happy canine companion.

It is an incredible experience to share with other volunteers and the amazing family of dogs at the shelter.

Part III: Land Adventures and Panoramic Views

Further on the nature side of activities in Rarotonga, don’t let the lagoon distract you entirely. The island’s mountainous interior offers spectacular challenges and unforgettable perspectives.

8. Hike the Cross-Island Trek to The Needle

For the adventurous spirit, the hike to The Needle (Te Rua Manga) is the most demanding and rewarding of all the activities in Rarotonga. This four-hour trek takes you directly across the island’s centre, culminating at the base of the spectacular rock spire.

The hike is challenging—often muddy and steep—but the panoramic views of the ocean, the lagoon, and the rainforest canopy are unparalleled.

9. Take the Ariimoana Inland Discovery Tour (Fruit Tour)

This is our absolute favourite of tours and activities in Rarotonga! Seriously – we can’t recommend Ariimoana highly enough! To get a genuine taste of the island’s agricultural heart there is nothing better than going with the Ariimoana Inland Discovery Tour

Run by the incredibly friendly and knowledgeable local guides, Kura and Jack, this tour takes you off the main road and deep into the fertile Ara Metua (the ancient inner road).

You will learn about the native plants, discover how taro is grown, and get to sample a wide array of seasonal tropical fruits straight from the tree. It’s an informative, delicious, and fascinating look at the local ecosystem and a great counterpoint to the marine activities. Plus, you will get to try upwards of 15 different local fruits grown on the island!

We picked a beautifully ripe Custard Apple.

10. Walk Up Hospital Hill (Accessible Viewpoint)

If the Cross-Island Trek sounds too ambitious, the walk up Hospital Hill offers an excellent, accessible alternative for rewarding views. Starting from either right up by the hospital or down at the beach near the Nikao Social Centre. From Nikao the road up to the hospital is a paved road that provides a steady incline (that gets the heart pumping!).

From the hospital there is a small dirt track that is well maintained and only takes around 15 – 25 minutes up to a viewpoint. Then once at the top, you are rewarded with sweeping views down to the airport and the harbour, and the northern side of the lagoon.

It’s a fantastic, quick burst of exercise and is particularly beautiful around sunset.

A short walk up Hospital Hill is a great activity to do in Rarotonga.
